The Victoria Old Sovereign gold coin was minted from 1893 until the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Although the Queen passed away at the beginning of that year, Sovereign gold coins continued to be produced with her portrait throughout the year in her honor. The coin has a fineness of 917/1000, corresponding to a fine gold content of 7.3 grams. Its nominal value is one British pound. Sovereign gold coins usually do not display a denomination, yet they are still considered official legal tender in the United Kingdom. However, the gold value of the coin far exceeds its face value of one pound.
The obverse of this historic gold coin features the beloved Queen Victoria in her later years, portrayed with dignity wearing a diadem, veil, and pearl necklace. The reverse shows the famous depiction of Saint George fighting the dragon.
The Victoria Sovereign gold coin is deeply connected to British culture and history.
